The System of Tools
The core practices and their associated resources (Big Idea Tool, Discourse Tools) are just one part of the system of tools. Each tool has a purpose within the system and its design is anchored in multiple bodies of research including: authentic scientific practice, how young people learn science, and how novice educators develop. Experienced teachers who desire to take their practice to a new level, will find these resources helpful, especially if used with peers. The diagram below shows how these tools are inter-related. The overarching instructional approach is that of Model-based Inquiry.
